“-Gamliel.”
“-and he’s got some nerve on him! He talked to me like I was his servant or something. Absolutely no respect for elders-”
“-Gamliel.”
“-and he even believes we should practice medicine in Israel! I mean-”
“Gamliel!” that’s almost a shout, so I stop to listen, “What?”
“Sounds like a really fascinating personality. I like the part about him being real trouble. Let’s go.”
“Saba, this isn’t a normal kid. When I met him yesterday, he got me up to my neck in confusion and embarrassment.”
“That proves nothing. I’ve known you since you were born, and as far back as I remember, your life is a long, twisting path paved with confusion and embarrassment. That’s what I like about you.”
“What!?” I can’t believe what I am hearing.
“For example, you had something to tell me yesterday. Did you leave me a message with the Temple’s personnel like a normal human being would do? No. You had to do it the hard way, turn the whole world upside down, party hard all night long, practice tricks and surprises just to make me come to you. Didn’t you read in the Scriptures, that the prophet came to the burning mountain and not otherwise?”
I really want to turn the table on him with the dishes and everything, but I’m too tired.
“I’m ready to cut my beard in half if I’m guessing wrong here.” he seals the deal, “Since you think the kid means trouble, he’s probably God’s chosen one after all. Go get him, I’ll be waiting for you in my gardens.”
It's 10 A.D. Jerusalem, Israel. Rabban Gamliel has the perfect life A luxurious suite, riches beyond imagination, a personal servant and his own teaching hall. Only that Gamliel is tired of life. He hates the endless Rabbinic discussions, sunlight and the presence of children.
But when a 12 year old Galilean, son of a carpenter, disappears on his parents during Passover and hides in Gamliel's teaching hall, the old Rabbi's life is thrown into turmoil. The Temple Police are on his tail suspecting he's kidnapped the boy, and the kid manages to step on Gamliel's every possible nerve. Then there's the prophecy and the curious orders given by a dying High Priest more than a decade before, which irritatingly appear to apply to the boy from Nazareth.
For help, Gamliel enlists his grandfather, Old Hillel, the landlord of a mysterious garden on the Mount of Olives. Hillel happens to be the oldest, wisest and funniest Jew alive, and luckily he loves children. The two Rabbis and the boy find themselves on a race against the clock to figure out the intricate puzzle they've been chosen to become a part of, a priestly mind-game that will ultimately influence what both Judaism and Christianity look like today.
